Managing Multiples
When you have multiple children sharing a single space, determining the best way to set that space up can be difficult. How do you accompany everyone comfortably? How do you let each child express his own interests? How do keep everyone’s belongings organized and neat? There are several ways you can design your children’s room to accommodate everyone.
Use Bunk Beds
Bunk beds are a great way to save on space, and give each child his own sleeping space. Place them in the four corners of the room, or along one wall with walking space in between. You can use matching bunks to bring the room together, and then place sheets, blankets, and pillows in each child’s favorite colors and designs to make them feel they have their own spot.

Instead of trying to figure out how to fit a desk for each child in one room, place one long table along one of the walls. Set-up individual work stations on the table, and place a chair that fits each child comfortably at each station. You can customize each work station with the child’s basic study needs and favorite crafting items. Use desk storage and accessories to personalize each child’s station.
Organize the Closet
When you have multiple children sharing a room, closet space gets used up quickly. Set-up their closet to best use the provided space. Start by removing the doors. You can use a curtain to cover it instead, if you wish. Next, select different built-ins that will accommodate your needs like rods for hanging clothes, drawers, shelves, and shoe racks. Organize the closet by item, then separate each child’s items with different colored hangers and shelf paper. For more storage, keep out-of-season clothes stored elsewhere.
Find Storage
There are several places you may have overlooked when trying to store your children’s belongings in their room. Use every inch of wall space by adding built-in shelves to store their favorite items, toys, books, games, and stuffed animals. Hang a multi-user towel hook on the back of the door for their bathrobes and sweaters. Store items under the beds and desk. Use the top shelf of the closet for extra storage. Use storage cubes as desk chairs. There are many hidden storage spaces throughout the room if you just know where to look.
Stay Organized
Once your children’s room is set-up, the best way to accommodate them all in single space is to keep it clean and organized. Have your children weed through their belongings at the end of the week, and purge anything they don’t need. Be sure they put their items back in their proper storage places. Keep the beds made, and the clothes hung in the closet or on the shelves. By keeping the room clean and tidy, it will look more managed.
It can be hard to accommodate multiple children in one space, but it’s not impossible. With a few tricks and a thought-out plan, you can fit all of your children in one space, and still make them feel special.
